Movie was very...interesting. Very much more like an independent film than a major studio picture--I don't think a major studio picture would have left things as literary and not nice and tidy and happy. But, that kind of stuff makes the critics happy and likely to call it a "deep, thought provoking movie," which it was. Certainly paints a very interesting picture of our need for human companionship. The book very clearly showed how lonely and full of despair a life on the road without commitment and companionship is and left me wanting to make sure I didn't end up like that. I don't want to spoil anything, but suffice it to say, the movie kind of leaves you with the opposite impression--that pursuing commitment and companionship will only leave you worse off and that it's not worth the risk.
But anyway, definitely worth seeing. After the movie,
Major G regaled me,
stellertony, and
Ruthalaska (and Ruth's +1 friend) with fabulous stories of flying United 777s over Baghdad. I want his job!
After the movie, I headed over to a friend's, where I watched BSG over pizza and a very, very nice Terrazas '06 Malbec I grabbed at Costco the other day. I think Malbec is becoming my new favorite varietal. Missy, I understand, now! (I might have to go back to Costco and grab a few more...)
And please, please, people--let us know if you're planning or even at all interested in joining us for New Year's Eve! Bob needs to know how much to make...you don't want to show up hungry and find nothing for you, do you?
