OTOH, I share your experience on the futility of seat blocking. It seems that the seat block never works when my MPC number is in the booking, but I always have empty seats next to me when I fly as a nobody.

You know good point here, due to some very specific circumstances I remember clearly my first flight as GO I was in paid F HKG-LAX. I'm pretty sure I didn't get it GO-DM, but I do vaguely recall my first ISM greeting as a DM, though - the purser made a point of telling me "this is your first flight as a DM, congratulations", or something of that sort. So it definitely was in the system. I know I was in Y when she told me that, but maybe it was a flight where J and F were oversold (it was on KA) and I couldn't be op-upped.
