Yes, you will have to go through full US immigration and customs procedures, get your bag, and then go to Air Canada to check in (even though Star Alliance should be seamless). If the bags are tagged through, I don't know if there is a baggage drop just past customs, or if you will have to go up to T-3 to check in @ AC with the baggage. Fortunately, it isn't that far, once you are done with all the arrival procedures. Walk, don't take the train.
How long does it take to go through all this? I have a tight connection of less than 2 hours however I am travelling in J for both sectors.
