In my case the rates was not immediately charged to the CC and the front desk adjusted the room bill to reflect the GC (basically it shows up as a $50 credit.) The remainder was then charged to my CC.
Don't know what would happen if a hotel charged the rate in advance.

I wonder if one would be able to use these certificates on mattress runs and pay with them at the check-in. I do not intend to drive to the burbs just to check out on a 50$ stay.
Applying the cert at check-in has not been an issue for me at the HP or SS.
