Now I'm getting quite anxious about missing the second segment due to the layover length. If I miss my second segment, which is to central america (Delta only has service there every other day), what are my options?

Since this is last minute trip, and I don't have any non-refundable reservations at my destination, I wouldn't mind if they were willing to put me on a Delta flight to another destination in Central/South America. Would something like that even be an option? I am a medallion member and my upgrades have already cleared for both segments on 11/25 if that makes any difference. There is an earlier flight out of CLT, should I call to try to see if they will switch me to that flight (I just don't want to have to pay to change)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Depending on your M status you could do a same-day confirm for the ealier outbound flight out of CLT. Here are the conditions:

Same-day Travel Changes
Our same-day travel options offer you greater flexibility on the day of your travel. We offer you a same-day confirmed travel option and same-day travel upgrades.

Platinum and Gold Medallion® members receive Same-day Travel Benefits.

Same-day Confirmed Travel
The same-day confirmed option allows you to change your flight time on the same day of travel for a fee of $50. To use the same-day confirmed option, you must confirm your new flight within 3 hours of the scheduled departure time. If you have a flexible fare (usually a refundable ticket), you may be able to change your itinerary without a fee.

You may also want to consider dumping your 1st leg and do a one-way rental and just drive to ATL the day before.
