Unless you are offered an upgrade for cash (as noted above)....be prepared for coach.
I may have the specific pecking order wrong, but these are the people who would get a "free" (operational) upgrade before you:
- GS
- 1K
- 1P (while this is your parents status, unfortunately, it is not extended to you)
- 2P
- NRSA
- 3P
- other *G
- other *S
- GM full fare/standard award
- GM any paid fare
Unfortunately, as a non status on an award, I think the only person you would "trump" is someone on a buddy pass, who is traveling without their sponsor.
Also, the dress up in a suit trick went away in the early 80's.
Finally, read through the UA FAQ's, and search some of the other forums of the carriers you are thinking of using. Lot of valuable information that will help you make your decision of which carrier/alliance to use in the future.
