Citi changed TYN rules sometime back (I think it is in August) where if you close credit card that earns TY points, the points earned from that card are deducted from TYN. So even if you have other cards that earns TY points, you will lose points from closed card.
I think this is what happened with OP's closed account.
Actually the rules were changed in March during the major devaluation of the TYP program (losing the fixed pt redemption benefits for certain cards). However, the enforcement may have started in August, with any newly canceled TYP account to trigger the enforcement. This would be my guess.
