Thanks for pointing this one out - it is ridiculous in the first place - it implies that Toronto and California have the same weather. How about "Toronto is closer to Buffalo NY than Los Angeles is to San Francisco"?
(This is based on recalling Ronald Reagan's rationale that Texas is closer to El Salvador than Texas is to Massachusetts, giving a rationale for invading El Salvador. It was then pointed out that Canada is closer to Detroit than Mishawaka is to South Bend, which is an even better reason to invade Canada.)
