I am interested in lounge access, or any benefits that might be transferable and usable with flights on QF. Ultimately, I'll end up flying QF (including next week) from the states, and more frequently within Australia.

I would first match to a competitor that flies Australian routes (like UA) and then see what they say...however, I have no idea whether QF even matches at all - you'll have to read through this thread.
UA will give you either a match or a challenge, as would AA - which would be the way to go in your case.
If you don't mind flying a few biz tickets on AA, you could easily do the Gold or Platinum ChAAlenge.
Edited to Add: Is Virgin Australia still flying to the States? You might wish to consider flying them as well.
