That said, 5 hours isn't the end of the world on a misconnect. My CO debacles involved CO wanting me to overnight (at my expense) when there were other viable CO alternatives that would got me going in the right direction. CO was more interested in trying to collect change fees and fare differentials than changing my routing to keep me moving.

Part of what I think HeathrowGuy is referring to is hotel guidelines for *A. 1Ks don't pay for hotels, regardless of cause of delay (AA has a similar such policy, as did NW). Similarly, *G on int'l misconnects get their hotels covered, IIRC.
Was automatically assigned the long wait, by the time he got to speak to someone they tried everything to keep him on that flight @ 10pm and when they said there were other options but now its doubtful that getting to DCA will be doable.
