While I DO agree that the phone call to Airtran might prove to be frustrating depending on the skill level of the agent, it will surely beat heck out of the frustration that the passenger will feel if the day he shows up to fly, that's the day he gets a "by the book" TSA agent whose marching orders are to "match the name EXACTLY or deny passage, period."
And I will respectfully disagree with you. You don't even need an ID to go through security. With no ID you will be SSSS'd which is actually faster through security at many airports and at most slightly slower. You absolutely will not be denied passage. The worse that will happen is that you will be SSSS'd - no big deal.
