Sure, but those people aren't "saving" them; they simply cannot spend them quickly enough. If folks are purposefully hoarding miles in such quantities they are putting themselves in a disadvantageous position.

I have used over 90 Int Biz awards so far for my friends and family.
I have helped people get many more awards.
Now I do not worry if my miles are worthless.
Not that I want it to happen, but even if my remaining miles all vanish,
that will increase the cost of my awards by 10% at the most.
I now continue to accrue as long as the cost is below 1.2c and
I try to redeem above 1.5c - I will always come out ahead.
The offers get better and better, with cheaper miles
I bought US miles for 2.5c to go to Asia for 2500$ in Biz instead of 3000.
Now I am getting them for 1.4c/mile with the double miles promo
DL/NW gave me transfer bonus 100% for effectively 1.1c / mile
The same ticket is now 1500-1800$ -
makes me fly a lot more than I thought I would.
