Are you talking about the current WN process or the previous one? IMO the current system is about as good as it's going to get with open seating, and I see little wrong with open seating on those west coast routes.

As for AA not flying those routes, it's hard to see why they ought to continue them if AA can't see them becoming profitable in the near future. They don't have a lot of other impact on the rest of the AA network - presumably the LAX services survive to feed international routes, including codeshares across the Pacific.
