Gift laws are so idiotic. In general (in a perfect world), if the receiver is the cause of the break-up, then they should hand the ring back. Period. End of story. Accepting a ring is a promise to marry and be faithful. If one can't hold up to that, well the ring goes back.

But it holds for the giver too. But clearly that is not your case. I really hope everything works out well for you.
