What I really want is a local version (AU/NZ) with no network specific firmware. Therefore, I'm considering flashing the phone when I get it. I've never done this before, so would appreciate some advice (no raincoat jokes, please).

I've updated firmware on my N95 with network specific firmware before though.
I've read a bit about it on the web, and the process as I understand it is:
- Change the product code to a local non-network specific one (not simple)
- Update the firmware
I understand I'll void my warranty and I'll run the risk of bricking the phone.
Any pointers and hints you can provide? Any other risks I should be aware of?
Thanks.
Hi - clearly changing the product code voids the warranty, and you mention this.
Flashing the SW is not usually a troublesome process, but things can go wrong. For example, there is always the risk that the original product version may have different HW than another product code, and so while a simple product code change seems easy there is the risk something can go wrong. This is unlikely, but feasible.
If something did go wrong, you may be liable for the costs of repair.
If you are aware of this, then go for it - there are no real tips other than ensure you have the latest SW installed on the PC and follow the instructions to the letter.
