However, because it was a weight issue, if the OP had said, "no, thanks," he most likely would have been told, "Well, sorry, but we're overweight and you're going to have to." It really sounds as if the whole incident was predicated upon UA (or, more accurately UAX -- yet another reason why I won't fly them) getting away with doing the least that it could.
