A very interesting question. I wonder if the problem here is different availability being made available to bmi as a partner of VS rather than ANA who have a separate partnership with VS?

If that's the case, then I think it would only be fair to use the ANA tool as a general guide to when there is availability rather than something to be relied on as is normally the case when looking for Star Alliance partner awards.

p.s. Virgin awards are very poor value compared to Cash & Miles redemptions on Star Alliance partners - would you consider sending your family via Frankfurt on Lufthansa or United/Air Canada to save a bucket of miles?
