I guess the point is moot now, but Qantas do have special fares for some circumstances. I'm not sure how discounted etc, they are, but here's a reference:

that was the first thing I checked, and since you have to pay full fare first and provide documentation to receive any kind of refund, it wouldn't really work... Ukraine is not that cooperative, even in special circumstances.
