We regard to SEA-OGG, we don't have enough info. Were DL elites actually being given free upgrades? natas43 didn't say. If they were, then there's an issue because the same favor should have been extended to NW elites.
Lacking evidence to the contrary, I'd assume the DL GA just made a poor choice of words ("This is a Delta flight, so we are not offering upgrades to Northwest Elite members") and probably was not giving free upgrades to anyone.
Exactly. The upgrades were op ups. In fact, at first the GA said that they had 6 seats in F, but then realized that there were only 5, but that 1 full fare F had not yet checked in. She bumped everyone but one to F (my son, but I was going to take his coach seat) and told me that if the guy didn't show up, she'd move me up on board, which she did.
Regarding SEA>OGG, I cannot confirm anyone getting free upgrades. I wasn't even going to ask, but when they made the purchase announcement, I figured I'd try. Since we were traveling with 4 kids, we headed to the club the minute we got off of the MSP>SEA flight, and got to the gate about 10 mins. before boarding. That is when they made the announcement about upgrades.
All in all, I bet it was just a poor choice of words, but unsettling nonetheless. It just sounded like I was not given the opportunity to compete for the upgrade because I was NW and not DL elite.
