Most hotels pay little to nothing for newspapers. USA Today has had an ongoing program for years that helps them boost readership to help advertising dollars.
And, environment or not, I want a newspaper outside my door. Happy to specify so when I check in.
And there better be two bars of soap.

i generally see them stacked on a table near the elevators on every floor, which makes sense to me. it's a short walk to get one and and those who actually want a newspaper can get one. this generates less waste and in a large hotel probably saves hundreds of $$$s a day. that adds up, especially for an amenity that increasingly fewer people desire. personally i am glad to not get one.
the availability of newspapers in hotels is a reflection of the decline of print newsmedia in general. the detroit news and detroit free press recently abandoned home delivery entirely, except for weekend editions.
i guess newspapers are becoming old fashioned
