During my training of new hire employees, this is always a tricky thing to teach. Most students tend to use the back of the hand on non-sensitive areas of the body, and I have to break them of that habit. Usually, the opposite is not true in that they are overly cautious when it comes to the sensitive areas (buttocks, crotch and breasts for females). However, in a recent class, one of my students got it backwards, and when I saw him pat the buttocks with the palm of the hand during a practice session, I interrupted him and said, "Whoa, there, partner! This ain't football! We're screeners. We screen passengers. We don't give 'em the ol' Good Game pat on the butt!"

I can understand why you would not want to use the palm on private areas, but why is it better to use the palm on non private areas?
