East side is closer to touristy things, but like others said, the rooms are nothing to write home about. The service I encountered there wasn't great either.

On the other hand I highly recommend the Marquis. I stayed there a couple months ago, was upgraded to a corner room, had a wonderful view of Times Square, and the service was great.
