I can tell you from very recent personal experience that this is nonsense. They refuse to ticket you if you insist on LHR-JFK on BA instead of AA for instance but if there is no AA direct flight (like LHR-EZE) there is no problem whatsoever.

Recalculation of taxes may lead to a price difference though. US taxes are cheaper than South America I believe. Not a big deal though.
