I've read about the update as well. This is the single largest complaint I have with the iPhone. Typically, though, when people have sent me a message with either a picture or video, AT&T sends a message with a link to a website and a code to view the files. Perhaps you should get in touch with AT&T support and find out why you aren't getting that. Oh, and of course, make sure your friend is sending it to the correct number.
