Not true. As mentioned, my itinerary was all UA except one flight. I upgraded at the gate using my US account and recvd UA credit (and US credit). The double credit was luck but I reckon that it should have gone to UA only.
What you say is true if you are on a US ticket and want to upgrade but credit to UA.
