Actually, the host country is responsible for the exterior security of the the embassy while the USMC guard the property of the U.S. of A. It is not uncommon to see varying types of security outside of our embassy depending on the location.
I did not know that, but then again my historical reading collection may have been from a time when that was not true. I know there were Marines at the front gate at Beirut; maybe that's what caused the change.
