OP can CANCEL and not rebook for a long time - his problem was he cancelled it within 24 hours window, during such CO's policy was to refund without penalty.
After the 24hour period, before the departure date, he can call to cancel any time. No problem.
When he is ready to rebook, go to the cancelled ticket PNR, book against it and then pay the tkt change fee. He will redeem a Central America ticket, so his ticket change fee may be more than $150.
I know all that, but I don't see why anybody would want to do this unless they could not find an appropriately priced flight to book way into the future for the initial redemption. I booked my two 90k redemptions a few days before the early cutoff and used flights nearly 330 days into the future. Now they are just sitting there waiting to be rescheduled when I need the credits.
