I was the one who ended up with a $1,800 or so AS ticket. I tried all kinds of fancy tricks with it (straight end-on-end, end-on-end with an open jaw in the middle, etc). No go. We were forced to buy a 'Y' fare from EWR-KOA. Worse yet, even with elite status, we did not get upgraded on most legs.
My advice? Stay away from AS unless you're ready to blow it all on one trip.
Wow, you are the 2nd soul now I heard about this. The person I learned about the AS peril has a different FT handle.
There are reasons why certain airlines are preferred, on top of people actually fly those names... 'nuf said.
