Do it at the airport ticket counter is always the better approach then do it on the phone - you get the new ticket (to fly to LAX), and the balance will be back to you in the form of a paper voucher, in the case of UA. They may charge you an "take ownership" fee, because technically they dont own your reservation, Expedia does.
The reason you got run-around is, you are essentially asking for a refund on a non-refundable ticket, because you are asking a "voucher" before you even have any residual.
I called UA to change my flights that were booked by TYP and the rep told me that I needed to call Expedia. I explained that I just want to exchange for a new flight and get UA vouchers for the difference and they told me that I still needed to call Expedia and that Expedia can do all that including issuing UA vouchers. Is that true? Do I really need to call Expedia? Or is there something I can say to the UA rep to get them to takeover the reservation?
