CO doesn't need a codeshare, if they're desperate enough, they can put you on another carrier that is or is not a partner.

Usually they will take this all into consideration when proposing the alternative, however. For example, if tomorrow's flight is wide open, and a hotel in EWR is $100, and they only need a couple volunteers, that's probably what they'll offer.

But if tomorrow's flight is full, and they need 10 volunteers, the offer may be something better (e.g., today).

Talk to the GA and see what they plan to do with you (and for how much). If it's acceptable, take it. If it seems chincy, counter up.
