Going SYD-SFO-FRA-xCDG-FRA-SFO-SYD was $1450 in taxes.
The base C fare of approx $5300 is the same for either, but taxes are $200 more for the Sydney-Paris return fare, versus the RTW going Sydney-Paris-Bangkok.

Thanks Zero savings that explains the extra $200.00 in taxes, it appears that taking the USA outbound & inbound rather than going through Asia is the reason for the extra tax, incidentally either the travel agent operator was inept or Thai Airlines blocked out all of August & early September for this fare hence the reason that I am going through USA twice- Thai had no available seats both outbound from Syd nor inbound from BKK- SYD for this period.
