That sounds like a training problem for TSA at DTW... first time I used it in MSP I explicitly asked "do I need to display anything post metal detector?" and they said no...
Indeed I don't notice them shouting "hang on to your boarding passes!" as people fill their tubs anymore (in MSP)... I imagine this adds confusion for infrequent travelers - different procedures at different airports.
