How to properly book a stopover?

Hello,

For the last couple of days, I've been searching for tickets for my parents, LGW-DXB-SYD-DXB-LGW. I found a reasonably priced itinerary at ITA, and looked up the fare rules regarding stopovers:

6 STOPOVERS PERMITTED
LIMITED TO 4 FREE AND 2 AT GBP 75.00 EACH.
1 FREE IN DXB IN EACH DIRECTION
2 FREE AT ANY OTHER POINT
2 AT GBP 75.00 EACH.
However, if I try to book a ticket at eg Opodo selecting 'multi city', the ticket prices 100GBP higher than the price quoted at ITA. Same goes for booking a ticket on Emirates.com using the stopover 'tab'.

How is this possible? More importantly: How can I book a free stopover?
