I think it actually is almost entirely a Skyteam problem. You have three choices for nonstop LAX-Australia: UA, QF, and VA. None are Skyteam (although DL is scheduled to open LAX-SYD on 1 July). Open Skies will soon have four nonstop entrants duking it out on LAX-SYD.

For one-stop service you can choose HA via HNL, CX via HKG, TG via BKK, JL via NRT, NZ via AKL, FJ via Fiji, OZ or KE via ICN, or MU via PVG. If you're willing to make more than one stop or connection there's CO, SQ, MH, EK and I don't know how many more. Of all the above, only KE is Skyteam. (CO heading for *A soon enough.)

Coverage is great, IMO, by Star or OW. Just not by this alliance.
