location
This was one of the first airfields in Russian air history. Flights here have been taking place since before the 1917 revolution. It was an aeroclub, that then turned into an official aerodrome. Many record planes took off from this airport by Gromov (record MOW-San Jacinto, CA non-stop flight, July 1937, among others) and Chkalov (MOW-YVR June 1937). To get there, take the Metro to the Airport station (hence the name for the station) and walk from there.
Moscow authorities (probably with some "help") converted this prime real estate to what you see today.
