using blackberry/PDA display instead of boarding pass

Hey guys i had a question. One of my co-workers who flys NWA mentioned that they saw someone board an NWA flight by just showing and then getting scanned a barcode off of their blackberry.

Anyone else see something like this? Is it only for NWA? Any other airlines do this?
