That was your mistake. Westin's vary widely in quality (just like Hilton, Sheraton and Marriott branded properties), some are quite luxurious and others are basic. I believe this is fairly well known to most FTers.

As for the Westin Vegas, while it is certainly not at the top of the scale I would not say it is at the bottom. Some of the suburban and airport Westins are worse in terms of luxury and service. And it is thankfully one of the few places in Vegas where smoking ******* are not a problem. ^

As for research, I almost always research hotels before booking so as to avoid known issues, but I would understand if you don't have the time.
