There are parts of Texas that are fine. AUS or CRP are perfectly nice. Even SAT and ELP are decent. Just steer clear of IAH, DFW, or anything in the Panhandle.
Ack! I'd much rather live in Houston or Dallas than Corpus Christi!
Austin and San Antonio have awful traffic — I generally find it to be worse than Houston's (keep in mind that in my years of living in Houston, I almost never had a work commute longer than 5 miles or that involved getting on a freeway). I find San Antonio, Corpus, and El Paso perfectly decent places to visit for the weekend, but not places I'd ever want to live.
