I just called Starwood customer service, and the lady was able to cancel the transfer because it was not yet sent to Delta. She said it cancelled OK and that the points will "reappear in my account".
However, my balance still lacks the 20000 points, around 5 minutes later.
She seemed confident though that my balance was higher on her end.

I called up SPG twice.
First time called the local UK number landed on an Italian lady who told me I was out of luck and that she knew the rules better than I did. Really poor customer service. She didn't take any of the I know someone who got it done just now.
I nearly had a heart attack after that call...
A minute later I called the Canadian number, landed on a helpful agent who reversed the transaction without any problems.
All of this doesn't change one thing, I now believe Delta are a gang of thieves/crooks whatever you want to call them. I hope for Jeff Robertson's sake he never comes close to a flyertalker. I now seriously contemplating just never setting foot again on a Delta plane as a result of this.
