This appears to be primarily an AA thing. This has been discussed previously, and most major airlines appear to be able to cope with open segments on e-tickets. I just hope that when I get to present my red carbon coupons I don't meet the response: "Oh, these aren't valid any more - it's only e-tickets now". With the frequently-experienced low level of staff training, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
