So (and this isn't related to your post anymore...), I just added up my gains due to the 500 mile change: in 2008, I'll get an extra 952 miles added when they retroactively apply the change. That's for six segments. If this year is typical of my flying pattern (I think it is), then next year I'll gain 1644 miles due to this reversal.
The co-pay change makes things more transparent for me, so assuming the co-pays are reasonable (i.e., total cost isn't increasing over what I pay for a successful upgrade), I am fine with that.
But it looks like I need to spend some time now working out some award trips for next year.
