What will your VA miles get you?
I also considered whether it was worth it to book on VA or pay the extra $$$ and stick with UA, but I reasoned why not go to Sydney in March and use the difference in fare to fund an additional trip to Europe on UA? @:-)
Plus, except for the legroom, VA's Y product is lightyears ahead of UA's. It will be nice to have AVOD on a 14 hour flight in Coach.
