Realistically, delays are common here in the US too, and seem to becoming more so, with tighter scheduling and less backup in the way of planes and crews.
If someone absolutely has to be somewhere at a given time, they are taking a real gamble booking a flight that is scheduled in an hour or two ahead of time.
For example, there have been plenty of threads on FT regarding missing a cruise sailing because they thought flying in a few hours ahead of time would be enough.
