In the best case, ORD's ticket counter may be able to put you on the first class standby list, but I doubt they'd be able to actually confirm you. In the more likely case, the AS agents at ORD would tell you to check at the counter at LAX once you arrive there.
Your luck probably depends upon the mood of the agent at ORD. Pick a happy, unbusy looking one.
