Delta "Bonus Miles" do not delay expiration, only "Miles" do . The word "Bonus" seems to be the key.
Virtually every freebie that Delta offers involves Bonus Miles. To get Miles, you need to fly, buy with DL credit card or use Rewards Network. (There may be others also.)
If you check your DL account, you will see Miles and Bonus Miles tallied separately.

As far as Skymiles expiration is concerned,
a bonus mile is NOT a mile. If you ventured to Delta Forum in the last couple of years, you would have seen countless tragic stories when Dash-to-Gate or
Siteseer Vote bonuses failed to extend the life expectancy of now-expired Skymiles.
Among the FFPs I collect miles, Delta Skymiles seems to be the most restrictive on the "eligible activities" to extend mileage expiration.
