Marriott Son Antem Spa and Golf Resort, Mallorca Spain-- Trip Report
I just came back from a 6 night stay at the Marriott Son Antem Spa and Golf Resort in Mallorca, Spain. This is a mixed location with a full-service hotel as well as MVCI villas. I've stayed at a few of these types of Marriotts and don't have anything really bad to say about it. I do like that there is always a Marketplace to buy some snacks at reasonable prices instead of $5 for a snickers from the minibar.
I had been in contact with the activities desk before I left and had received their complete list of activities. While extensive, I noticed that it seemed to lean heavily to children. This should've been a big alert to me.
When I arrived, the staff (entirely consisted of Germans, really, no joke) were very friendly and efficient. I was given my room which was very nice with a big terrace to enjoy a decent view of mountains and a golf course.
Ok, golf courses are nice. There are 2, east and west. Both are very good and by no means easy, but not exactly the most difficult. Tennis courts are plentiful. They have a full-time professional. Andres is half-Spanish/half-Swedish. Nice guy. Good instructor. I just hit around with him one-on-one just to have some fun. Decent rates. Spa is very nice. Yordan was my masseur. Very professional and excellent. Perhaps the best massages I've ever had in my life. Every afternoon, a little slip was put under my door with a "special offer" from the spa. I received a special offer of 53 euros for 90 minutes massage. I thought this was MORE than reasonable and took advantage of it 4 times. Every time I asked for Yordan and he was available.
Now, to the bad parts. The pool is large and has a separate area for children, but I estimate that 90% of the guests were German and British. For some reason, the parents were often in the bar, golf course, or tennis courts leaving the children in the pool unattended and unsupervised. One lifeguard who did not speak English or German was on duty, but he was not in a mood to control the kids. They were really out of control. Adults simply could not enjoy a swim in this pool. In addition, even though the pool is outside, it is bordered on 2 sides by buildings, and when the adults that were sunbathing were smoking like chimneys. The smoke just got trapped in by the buildings and created a very unhealthy atmosphere. It was really disgusting. The other bad thing was the food. This hotel's food is HORRIBLE. The breakfast was ok, but everything on the menus, especially for room service was just really really bad. The hotel's remote location means that unless you have a car, you are stuck eating the hotel's food. I did not bother to rent a car. I wish I had. The food was really bad, poor presentation, very very small portions and just horrible.
I did complain to the F&B Manager and he was very empathic. He did reduce my F&B bill and said he would look into things. He seemed to be surprised which I found a little hard to believe. I had heard the same thing from other guests.
Overall, the staff are really friendly, the rooms are nice, and the activities are plentiful, but if you are a single adult or couple, I do not think I would recommend this hotel. It is much more geared towards families with lots of offspring.
