Seeking advice: UA charged my parents for trying to standby for non-stop flight

My parent was travelling tpe - sfo - ord - yyz pure UA metal (couldn't book sfo-yyz at the time due to availability)

I told my parent to ask for standby at TPE airport for sfo - yyz non-stop, but check-in agent says that's change of routing and he will have to pay $100 (old fee) for changing itinerary. He paid for the convenience and didn't want to argue with the agent.

My experience at FT taught me otherwise. I thought as long as final destination is the same, the non-stop is earlier than connection flight, I should be able to apply for standby. Even the $75 confirm standby is cheaper than paying $100.

And the flight look extremely easy for free standby (taken night before flight):
[KVS Availability Tool 3.2.0/Platinum - Apollo: ITN/US-ARL]
Code:
Carrier Flight From Depart To Arrive A/C St Availability
--------- ------ ---- --------- ---- --------- ---- ---- --------------------------------------------------
UA 1288 SFO 10:55 YYZ 18:50 319 0 F3 Y9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 K9 L9 G9 P3 A2
Should I contact MP Customer Service? What can I ask for? Should I bother with all the hassle?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
