You were lucky that you weren't going the other direction (JL to CX). If CX doesn't get a ticket number within a certain time of the reservation, it will just cancel it. You have to "manually" make sure CX gets the ticket number for the new reservation. This has been discussed in this forum previously.
Yep - I'm aware of that peculiarity with CX. I've run into it before a few years ago with a multi-carrier itinerary (non-RTW).
