As flyertalk is such an enormous community, I had the impression that the "comp status question" was asked and answered several times in MilesBuzz!. And Bingo! - after doing a search - I found some threads over there.
If you have decided in which individual FFP you want comp status, you can also go directly to that particular forum and do a search and see what has been discussed before. You might find the answers you're looking for with no wait. If you are not satisfied, the folks who know the ins and outs of that FFP are likely to see the question and offer their help.
