You came in at a time when
all the east coast departures were arriving. To make matters worse, those airplanes then take a new host of passangers back to the east coast. The boarding area, ticket counters, gates and baggage claim are all stuffed to (over)capacity, especially in the summer.
That time period, between 8pm and 10pm, is the busiest time period of the day, IMO. They are moving ahead with construction of the new terminal there, so at the current rate, expect a much smoother experience starting around the year 2100.
